Reunion in Poland
My name is Fridrik and I grew up on a farm in a humble valley nestled in the hills of western Iceland. As a kid, I would relentlessly consume British and American media, namely books and movies, and ever since I’ve yearned to discover what lay beyond my rather insular home. As soon as I was able, I packed my bags and headed off to see what the world had to offer! My curiosity has brought me to far-flung places but I truly found my home in the UK and Ireland. Eventually, I met Laura during my studies in The Netherlands, and together we’ve kept on our journey to experience and share in different cultures!
My name is Laura and I grew up in a tiny village nearby Cologne. As you can see in the photos, the landscape is very green and there are a lot of forests in the area. As soon as I turned 18, I moved to The Hague in The Netherlands to study European Studies. During the summer, Fridrik and I moved to Iceland to work in a hotel. I had been staying in Athens last semester, but due to the pandemic, the experience has unfortunately not been as expected. Currently, I am writing my dissertation and following a few online classes. I am happy to live in Poland now and to have the chance to get to know a new country and culture!
The Netherlands made being separated due to the pandemic much more difficult. Each plan for a reunion since January had failed. When we finally got the opportunity we couldn’t have asked for more perfect circumstances. We had decided to come to Poland to volunteer as English tutors, spending our first few days in the stunning city of Gdánsk. The weather, the romance of the city, and on top of it all – it was Fridrik’s birthday!
We were immediately struck by the beauty of Gdánsk. It felt as if we had stepped into a fantasy! It was easy to become fully immersed in its vibrant atmosphere and history. We toured the city, took a lot of photos, and stopped for the occasional drink. Suffice to say, we enjoyed our first holiday together immensely!
Our experiences in Grodizk so far
Upon arriving in Grodizk Maziowiecki we were warmly welcomed. So far we’ve spent our time getting to know our flatmates better and exploring the town together. During the weekend following our arrival we all went to the main park to spend the weather paddling around the pond and playing badminton. We are looking forward to exploring both our surroundings as well as the further reaches of Poland. Currently, we are planning on hiking in the Tatras next weekend!
